As an esthetician and about to graduate with my MBA in marketing, you put the whole beauty service industry literally in one article! So many of my mentees or people in the industry constantly mix the two and why a lot of beauty services don’t feel ‘worth’ their prices. Too many think they are luxury when they either need to stay as premium or re-market themselves with a new luxury strategy plan! Love this article!

This is very well put! Thanks for sharing. Brand owners need understand where they actually sit I the market and why in order the leverage their positioning and be profitable. Although a lot of other things come into play for profitability, categorizing your brand properly helps you better understand your customer. I wrote and article about fashion archetypes that I think goes hand in hand with this. So many brand owners don’t realize that they aren’t the taste makers in the market. And that’s ok. Just know it and own it! 🥰

The worst for me—I guess because we’re looking for a house—is anything to do with home finishes. If they say luxury whatever, it’s obviously not since they feel like they have to tell me it is. If anything is cringe, this is it. Luxury vinyl plank flooring? Luxury isn’t imitation wood floors. Luxury is real wood floors. I don’t know who they think they’re fooling..? 🤨

Ugh, I feel for ya! It's so easy to slap "luxury" on something (that clearly isn't) and hope folks are fooled. But we know, don't we?! And you're right, if you have to tell me, you clearly NOT 😆

Brilliant comment!

Thanks for explaining it so simply. Now I have a better lens to look at my articles, newsletters and - in a bit - offerings.

I always imagine premium as a masculine figure, and luxury - feminine.

Ooooff, and that’s why luxury feels so indulgent and “in the body”, don’t you think? Love that perspective 🙌🏼

Exactly my thoughts. You feel the luxury, and it becomes a necessity even if you didn’t need it before, like a good addiction!!
